Jaya Nag is a versatile force in the world of music and artistry. Born and raised with roots in Purulia, her journey as a singer, performer, composer, lyricist, concept thinker, director, writer, piano player and anchor has been nothing short of remarkable. Her artistic brilliance stems from a rich tapestry of influences and mentors that have shaped her into the powerhouse she is today.
Jaya's musical journey began under the nurturing guidance of her mother, Basabi Ghosh, who instilled in her the foundational lessons of music. It was her English teacher, Smt. Soma Chatterjee, at Santamoyee Girls High School,Purulia, who recognized and nurtured her talent turning her into an undaunted and confident performer. Later she persuaded her vocal training under the guidance of Anirban Sinha in Purulia.
Jaya's pursuit of excellence led her to train under legendary figures like Asha Bhosle. She further honed her skills under the tutelage of masters from various Gharanas such as Pt. Jasraj Ji of Agra Gharana And Mewati Gharana, Sri Abhijeet Mukherjee of Patiyala Gharana, and Smt. Piyali Chowdhury of Benaras Gharana. Her training in Rabindrasangeet was under the guidance of Smt. Pramita Mallick and Srabani Sen, while she explored Adhunik music with Tunai Debasish Ganguly and Tinkobir Gaan with Smt.Nupurchhanda Ghosh. Jaya delved into the world of Nazrul Geeti under the guidance of Smt. Krishna Majumder.Her piano skills were refined at Trinity College, London, under the mentorship of Tapash Bhowmick, completing her grooming under the maestro Debojyoti Mishra.
Jaya's artistic vision culminated in the creation of the all-female band, 'Mrittika.' The band's innovative fusion of traditional and contemporary sounds garnered praise from luminaries like Kabir Suman and Kalyan Sen Barat. Kalyan Sen Barat, a pivotal figure in Jaya's life, collaborated with her on several projects, including the poignant composition "Dugga Mayer Joy". " Katataar," and " Porichoyer Gaan " are two remarkable works of ‘Mrittika’ with the former earning prestigious recognition, including India Book of Records and Herbert World Record. Through 'Mrittika,' Jaya aimed to showcase Bengali music on the global stage, a mission close to her heart.
Beyond her artistic endeavors, Jaya is a dedicated educator, owning and teaching at the Omkar Institution, while also mentoring aspiring talents through Panchakabi.
Jaya’s contributions have been recognized nationally, earning her a National Scholarship in Rabindrasangeet and top honors from Paschim Banga Rajya Sangeet Academy. She is a familiar face on Yuvavani Kolkata and television screens and an empanelled artist of ICCR, captivating audiences with her charisma and talent.
Jaya Nag's journey is not only marked by her individual achievements but also by the unwavering support of organizations like the World Association of Women Warriors (WAOW). In 2024, she was honored as the state ambassador of WAOW, a testament to her advocacy for women's empowerment through her art. Her commitment to social causes was further recognized when she received the Warrior Award from Kiran Bedi in 2022, highlighting her role as a beacon of inspiration both on and off the stage.
